Being married to a real estate investor is an adventure full of unexpected twists and turns. Imagine a life where each day brings new opportunities, challenges, and discoveries. Today, I dive into the unique perspective of my wife, Jandel Crutchfield, a professor, mother, and partner in this journey. We explore our partnership, the benefits and challenges we face, and the lessons we’ve learned along the way.
Can You Tell Us a Bit About Yourself?
My name is Jandel. I am 37, a wife, and a mother. I’m a professor researching ethnic and racial disparities in sectors like education, health equity, economics, housing, and transportation. I’m involved in my kids’ school and our local church, which keeps me busy.
What is it Like to Be Married to a Real Estate Investor?
Being married to a real estate investor is like an adventure, with new discoveries happening frequently, almost like a news feed. There are often breaking news situations or ongoing developments. It’s an adventure filled with fast-paced changes.
How is Being Married to Me (John Crutchfield) Different from Being Married to Just Any Real Estate Investor?
You are not just a real estate investor; your high energy, drive, and ambition take it to another level. There’s a lot more breaking news, more action, and a lot of ups and downs on this roller coaster ride compared to what I imagine other real estate investors experience.
What is Your Role in the Real Estate Business?
I support and fill in the gaps, giving advice when needed. While I’m not deeply involved in finding deals or renovations, I enjoy hearing about new deals, making cosmetic recommendations, and seeing the finished renovations. My role is tertiary but supportive, always there when needed.
Have You Seen Any Benefits or Challenges Since the Business Began?
Yes, there have been benefits like more strategic planning for our personal finances and increased cash flow, which allows us to do more for our family. There are also challenges, particularly balancing the effort and time required for the business with raising a young family. We are active in the community, and finding that balance has been challenging but manageable.
What Advice Do You Have for Couples Embarking on a Real Estate Journey?
It’s important to discuss roles and expectations in advance. The time and effort required to be successful can impact family life. Whether or not the spouse works can affect financial aspects like loan eligibility and the time available to invest in the business. Effective communication and planning are key.
Can You Share Something Funny About Me?
You love to sing but often mix up lyrics to songs, combining different songs together, like melding “Boy You Should Know That” with Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely.” It’s funny and endearing.
What’s Something Funny About You (Jandel Crutchfield)?
I enjoy eating cornbread with milk and sugar, something many people might find unusual.
